Robert C. McDonald Scholarship Fund
The Robert C. McDonald Scholarship Fund was established
in 2006. A grant is made each year to a graduating,
college-bound senior at John Jay High School, Katonah, who
has shown a commitment to community service.
This scholarship is given by the local choral group Westchester Oratorio Society (WOS) in memory of Bob McDonald- beloved friend, founder, treasurer and "chief-of-staff" of the Society. In addition to Bob's many years of devoted service to the chorus, as a long-time resident of South Salem, he gave of himself to many other community organizations as well.
The award is intended for a student who has demonstrated similar spirit in serving his or her community. (Preference may be given to a student who has excelled in music, but community service will be the key criteria in granting the award.)
Another way to make a gift to the Westchester Oratorio Society is to include WOS in your will or name WOS as a beneficiary of a revocable trust, retirement plan, or life insurance policy. A bequest is deductible for federal estate tax purposes. A bequest can be made by creating a new will, adding a codicil to your existing will, or naming WOS as a beneficiary of a revocable trust, retirement plan, or life insurance policy.
A recent change in the tax laws permits people age 70½ and older to give up to $100,000 per year from their IRA directly to a charity and avoid paying income taxes on the money. Regardless of age, there are many other options for donating to WOS with beneficial tax consequences. Consult your attorney or tax advisor.
Also, the law firm of Casper & Fischer LLP in Mt. Kisco (Tom Casper 914 242 4900) has graciously agreed to offer a free consultation to those wishing to explore a planned gift to WOS.Back to Top
Gifts of highly appreciated stock are another method of making a gift and a way to possibly avoid capital gains taxes. Stock may be donated electronically or stock certificates may be signed over to WESTCHESTER ORATORIO SOCIETY.
